Some sessions are special because of the photographs. Others are special because of the people.
This one was both.
Years ago, I met Lisa through the wedding industry back in the Kansas City area. We spent countless weekends helping couples celebrate one of the biggest days of their lives, and like so many friendships formed in this industry, life eventually took us in different directions.
So when Lisa reached out to tell me her family would be vacationing along the Alabama Gulf Coast, I couldn't have been more excited to reconnect.
There's something incredibly meaningful about photographing someone during a completely different chapter of life. Instead of planning a wedding, we were documenting a family vacation filled with laughter, growing boys, and memories that they'll look back on for years to come.
The evening couldn't have been more beautiful. Soft pastel skies, gentle waves, and two teenage boys who somehow balanced being cool with still happily joking around with their parents. Randy and Lisa made it easy to see where that joy comes from. Whether they were walking hand in hand through the surf or sneaking away for a few moments together, their love was effortless and genuine.
One of my favorite parts of the session was watching everyone interact naturally. There was plenty of teasing, laughter, piggyback rides, and the kind of candid moments that can't be posed—they simply happen when a family enjoys being together.
And then there was Linda.
Every family has that person, and on this evening, Linda proudly accepted the role of designated phone, sunglasses, and wallet holder while the rest of the family stepped in front of my camera. She cheered everyone on from the sidelines, kept everyone's belongings safe, and made sure we could move from pose to pose without worrying about where anything was. Every family session has an unsung hero, and this time, it was definitely Grandma Linda.
As the sun dipped lower over the Gulf, we finished the evening with classic family portraits, sweet moments between Randy and Lisa, and a few playful photos of the boys that perfectly captured their personalities.
These are the sessions I love most—not because everything is perfectly posed, but because they reflect who a family truly is.
Lisa, thank you for trusting me after all these years. It was such a joy to reconnect, catch up, and preserve this season of life for your beautiful family. I hope these photographs always remind you of this vacation, the laughter you shared, and the people who make every trip worthwhile.
I can't wait until our paths cross again. 🤍
